Galati, History – Early Times

The first traces of Galati History date back from the Neolithic when a small town was founded on the ancient land of the Dacians. Once with the beginning of the Roman domination over this land, the inhabitants became more and more dependent on this new organization and lifestyle. Nowadays discoveries have proved that Galati dates before the foundation of Moldavia county.

The historians first mentioned this region in their writings in 1445, in a document signed by the ruler Stefan the Great himself. Galati had a period of atrocious wars against the Turkish troops, but their losing the battle turned out to be a real blessing for the town as it soon became the only port doing internal and external commerce.

Galati, History – Middle Ages

1789 came with difficult times for Galati. The city turned into a victim of the Turkish-Russian wars, the Russians burning a great part of this amazing place. As always, the Danube saved the town and its locals. Irrespective of the historical and cultural events, the fluvial commerce and the navigation on this important river continued to flourish and to convince modern countries such as United Kingdom, France and Germany to set up local consulates. Huge and beautiful boats passed by Galati and more and more investors were willing to start their businesses here.

After the ferocious confront between Turkey and Russia, Galati’s inhabitants being nothing but innocent victims, Galati became once more an innocent participant in another cruel war, this time between the Greeks and the Ottomans. However, this city fought again against its faith and in 1837 it was proclaimed an independent port, headquarter of the European Commission of the Danube, together with Sulina.

Galati, History – Recent Times

Galati History is related to an important figure in the Romanian history, the great ruler Alexandru Ioan Cuza, whose reign over both Moldavia and the Romanian County led to the unifications of these two lands and to the creation of the later country Romania. From this moment on the city went through different periods of evolution and then decade, but the most atrocious period was represented by World War II when the entire historic center of the town was destroyed. The building of the largest steel plant from Eastern Europe turned Galati into an industrial town and helped to its economic, cultural and social evolution.

The history of Eastern Romania was linked to the wars between the Ottomans and the Greeks and later on the Russians and the Romanians.
