Bucharest History, Romania
The city of Bucharest is the most important industrial as well as political hub for the country of Romania. It is also the capital city for Romania and hence one can understand the importance of Bucharest for the government as well as the locals of Romania.
The history of Bucharest faced many ups and downs since its birth till the date when it was named the capital of Romania. It was the year 1459 when Vlad III (the Wallachian prince) used to use this land as his residence. During those days the city was called as the Citadel of Bucureşti. The residence of Vlad III was called as Curtea Veche or the old prince court in English. The monument is located right in the center of Bucharest and today it is being used as a museum under the government control.
The Ottoman Empire was the suzerain of the land somewhere during the start of 17th century. Suzerain is that empire which is the head of the state but the internal affairs of the state are managed by the local rulers. During this rule, the Ottoman Empire and even the local princes never took care of the city and hence Bucharest degraded during the Ottoman rule.
Located in the proximity of the old prince court is Lipscani, a historical road which was known as Ulita Mare somewhere during the year 1589. It was this road from where the redevelopment of the city had started. By 1700s, the city of Bucharest was the most important hub for trading and business for Wallachian (a historical region in Romania which doesn’t exist as of now).
After this, Bucharest went in the hands of many rulers but it was year 1861 when two historical regions Moldavia and Wallachian were merged to give rise to Principality of Romania. Bucharest was called as the capital of this new principality. The tag of capital city helped Bucharest grow exponentially in terms of economy and population.
Germans did rule the city from 1916 and there touch remained till 1989. It was the Revolt of Romania in 1989 that helped the city be freed up from foreign clutches and originally become the capital of free Romania.
From 2000 till today the city of Bucharest has seen great modernization in its architecture.
