National Library of Romania are beginning in St. Sava College library and it was opened in 1838 having at that time 1000 volumes. In the year 1859 after the revolution the library receives the status of national library, but in the year 1901 is removed and the volumes are transferred to the Romanian Academy Library until 1955. Starting with the year 1990 the State Library receives the name of National Library, the title is still present.

The library now has approximately 13000000 units of encyclopedic literature. The library fund may be organized into 2 categories, the first: The current Funds includes romanian and foreign creations, newspapers, books, magazines and the second: The special collections funds refers to manuscripts, historical archives, bibliophily, cartography, prints, photographs.
