Ponta Delgada, Portugal - Overview: The Volcanic City of PortugalThe capital city of Sao Miguel, Ponta Delgada is also the largest one in Azores. This flat town stretches along the coastal areas of the island. Ponta Delgada flaunts many beautiful convents, white houses and churches and has a very illustrious history. The São Sebastião church, which was established in the year 1533, is very famous for its façade and doorways. The Carlos Machado Museum showcases the farming and fishing industries of the region. Very near to this island are the thermal springs and volcanic crater lakes. The eastern region of the city is fenced by spa resorts.
Location & Population
With a population of 47,505 and capturing a total area of 234 square kilometers, Ponta Delgada is one of the largest cities in the country. The Sete Cidades, the famous mountain range, engulfs the northwestern section of the city. The Sete Cidades valley and the Sete Cidades Lake also exist in the same range.
Economy
The northern areas of this tourist hub of Azores are captured by the sub urban towns of Cima and Baixo. Baixo is very famous for cultivating pineapple, whereas Cima has earned a niche owing to its festivities. The eastern section is covered by Sao Roque, which has added to itself a seaside walking facility and a new marina. Still, agriculture remains the backbone of the economy and crops are grown on the western front.
Transport
The city is very well connected to the adjoining ones and especially to Lisbon, as it forms the heart of the country. Road communication is excellent, as the country boasts of some excellent bus services in entire Europe. Buses operate at a very high frequency. Ponta Delgada is very famous for its railways. Railways form the major mode of carrier in the country, as their operation both in and outside the city is very nice. As the city is large and holds an important position in Portugal, air service also finds a niche in this city. Ponta Delgada flaunts an international airport and the city to the outside world.
