Coimbra Sights and Landmarks Guide, Portugal

Coimbra Sights is filled with educational structures, museums and other notable landmarks not only in the city but in the country as well. Brace yourselves as you see what this historical place has to offer its visitors.

Coimbra Sights – Educational Structures, Churches and Relics from the Past

Coimbra boasts of the best attractions in the whole of Europe. Here you will see all the good things that the place is willing to provide to locals and vacationers. Just like Spain’s Sevilla Sights, these views are remarkable.

Biblioteca Joanina. The well-known Biblioteca Joanina, which was a gift from Joao V in the early 18th century, is the Old University’s library. The tables are made of rosewood, ebony and jacaranda and add to the relaxation of students while reading. The elaborately frescoed ceilings make this library more appropriate for studying. There are a total of 300,000 books in the library, which are kept in the golden Chinoiserie bookshelves. These reading materials are ancient and leather-bound books which deal with law, philosophy and theology. Some of the contents of the books are painted on the walls for hands-on study.

Igreja de Santa Cruz. Far from the fashionable stores, this site reintroduces the Renaissance times. One can see some of the best works of the Coimbra school once he gets through its terrace and colorful 18th century arc. The school’s finest works that are displayed include a pulpit and tombs supposed to be made by Nicholas Chanterene.

Convento de Santa Clara-a-Nova. Convento de Santa Clara-a-Nova is mainly dedicated to the memories of Dona Isabel, Dom Dinis’ wife. This was built in the 17th century to replace Convento de Santa Clara-a-Velha, which was flooded during the same period. The life story of Isabel is narrated by the aisle panels while the movement of the solid-silver casket is explained by the others. Her clothes can be found in a room in the church. Festa da Rainha Santa focuses on the Statue of Dona Isabel.

Museu Nacional Machado de Castro. Museu Nacional Machado de Castro is the home of Portugal’s significant collections of sculptures from the 14th to the 16th centuries. This museum is settled in a former Bishop’s Palace.

Coimbra Sights – Parks and Recreational Areas

Coimbra will not be complete without parks where children may spend some time playing and recreational areas fitted for the young at heart. The list includes the following:

Portugal dos Pequenitos. Kids enjoy visiting Portugal dos Pequenitos, an artistic and adorable park. A number of children enjoy climbing over, into and through the doll house versions of Portugal’s well-known monuments. This is the park that every child should not miss. Parents also enjoy taking cute pictures of their joyful kids. After playing, the family can visit those interesting mini-museums of marine life, clothing and furniture.

Jardim Botanico. A perfect place for quiet and refreshing relaxation is the beautiful Jardim Botanico. It was founded by the Marques de Pombal and reflects the 16th century Aqueduto de Sao Sebastiao. The garden is filled with lovely flowerbeds, oblique alleyway and well-designed fountains. Plant lovers can visit the lush greenhouses and the nearby Botanical Museum.

Coimbra Sights were indeed created both for aesthetical and pleasurable reasons. You may closely relate these with other European attractions like the majestic Valladolid Sights in Spain.
