Gdansk is a city that is not a stranger to prosperity, culture and history. The combination of these three mentioned things makes the city a perfect tourist destination. Gdansk Sights – Famous Landmarks
A number of the most famous landmarks found in the city are a collection of the most captivating cultural sites in Gdansk. They have witnessed the city’s noteworthy history and are still standing to tell the tale.
The Neptune Fountain. This fountain has been the symbol of the city since 1633. This city emblem shows a sculpture of the Roman god of the sea holding his trident. The fountain reminds the residents of the relationship between Gdansk and the sea; of the sea’s importance to the city.
The Golden Gate. This Renaissance-styled landmark was built in the early 17th century. The Golden Gate is perhaps one of the most outstanding tourist attractions in Gdansk. Sculptures ornament the top of the gate and these represent the four virtues of the citizens: Harmony, Justice, Piety, and Prudence.
St. Mary’s Basilica. This church, built in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is the biggest brick church in the world. The interior of the church has many notable displays from Medieval to Baroque era. Here, visitors can see the stone Pieta, a reproduction of Memling’s the Last Judgment, and the astronomical clock. A viewing gallery is found on the main tower.
Gdansk Sights – Monuments
The city of Gdansk values the heroism and significance of its citizens. With this said, the city has several monuments honoring its fallen residents from the past. These monuments are included in the most visited tourist attractions in Gdansk.
Monument to the Fallen Shipyard Workers. The three imposing 42-meter structure with anchors, which symbolize hope, were erected at the gates of the shipyard. This monument was built as a tribute to the victims of the bloody workers’ strikes that occurred in December of 1970.
Monument to the Defenders of the Polish Post. The heroism of the 50 post office employees during the Second World War is the main inspiration for erecting this monument. Although they were outnumbered, these people still fought the German forces for 14 hours and only surrendered after the aggressors threatened to burn the post office to the ground. The monument is made of stainless steel and one of the most striking examples of communist-period art. It was unveiled on the 40th anniversary of that fateful day of bravery.
Gdansk Sights – Recreational Sites
A trip to any place is not complete without stopping by and relaxing at some of the leisure sites. Gdansk has a number of attractions perfect for lazing around and having fun.
Oliwski Park. In the 18th century, this park was created instead of the cloister gardens. The plant species found in this park came from all four corners of the world. It is divided into different gardens such as the alpine and winter gardens. Oliwiski is a perfect backdrop for a romantic walk.
Municipal Zoological Garden of the Sea Coast. Gdansk’s zoo is one of the biggest in Poland and it is a perfect place for both recreation and education. Every year, the zoo’s visitors totals to more than hundreds of thousands.
