Geography
The city is situated in the central part of the Philippines. It is a part of the Southern Bicol Region with three main islands to boast. It has Masbate, as the biggest island, Ticao and Burias.
The quiet province of Masbate is influenced by its geographical location. It is bounded by Samar and Leyte on the East with the Visayan Islands on its north. The province also faces three southwestern coasts - Sorsogon, Albay, and Camarines Sur.
History and Culture
Masbate is made up of volcanic rocks that were formed some hundred million years ago. Before men even set foot on the islands, the Masbate land area was already formed. The early civilization appeared to have crafted tools out of wood, bone and stone.
The first village in the city developed the area through pottery, farming, and crafting of stone tools. Today, the remnants of these people can still be seen in famous underground caves like Bat-ongan and the Kalanay.
As part of Masbate's culture, the local cowboys gather every year to display their untamed cattle during the Rodeo Filipino Festival. This international fair is a medium of fun and excitement for the local residents living in the area and for tourists as well.
