Chisinau, or Kishinev is the capital city and also the largest municipality in Moldova. This Travel Guide will give you an insight of Chisinau`s touristic potential. Chisinau is a great place to visit if you want to see the lively mixture of past and present day monuments and buildings. On the old hills of the capital lie the churches of Mazarache(built in 1752), St. Constantin and Elena(built in 1777) and Annunciation(1807). Also, at the foot of the hill is the Cathedral of St. Tiron the Martyr,which also includes its convent(the building where the nuns live and the orthodox souvenir shop).These churches are a wonderful display of middle-age eastern religious architecture.
Another amazing point of interest is the Birth of Christ Cathedral, originally built in 1836.During the time Moldova was a part of the URSS, the cathedral was converted into a secular facility, but upon declaring its independence from the Soviet Union, the building was converted back into a holy place. Also, you should not miss the remarkable monuments built in the Russian classicism style: Cathedral and Bell Tower(1831-1835) and the Triumph Arch(1840).These building are harmonious in composition and have a calm grandeur. Last but not least, another popular Moldavian monument is the bronze statue of Steven the Great, who was an imposing leader defending his people against the ottomans in the 15th century.
