San Luis Potosi History, Mexico

The history of San Luis Potosí dates back to 10000 B.C. or even before that. Various excavations and different findings prove that this land was inhabited by Chichimecas, Huastecos, and huge number of Guachichile Indians during those early years. Descendents from these different tribes are still living in and around the city of San Luis Potosí. They can still be found to speak languages which their fore fathers used to speak. Same is the reason why many languages are spoken by the locals of San Luis Potosí.

It was the culture of Huastecos tribe which gave birth to two different cities which were called as El Consuelo and Tamtok. It is said that cities existed between the 3rd century and the 10th century. It has been observed that it was the presence of these cities that influenced various other groups of San Luis Potosí like Pames, Otomis, and Chichimecas.

Before the Spanish finally arrived in the city of San Luis Potosí it was the Chichimecas who were dominating in this land. It was the year 1522 when Hernán Cortés entered the country of Mexico with his Spanish Army and in no time took control of San Luis Potosí. It was the year 1539 when various priests entered the city of San Luis Potosí so as to convert the locals of the city into Roman Catholicism. It was the year 1546 when various minerals were discovered in the city of San Luis Potosí. This was the time when the population in the city of San Luis Potosí grew exponentially as many Spanish businessmen wanted to take control of the larger chunks of business while many workers entered the city in order to search for new jobs.

It was the year 1846 when the Mexican Army had to fight against the U.S. army which was trying to control the city of San Luis Potosí. Although no battle took place yet the locals of the city provided full support to the army of Mexico which was all set to fight against the U.S. troops.

French entered the city of San Luis Potosí but its control was brought down by the year 1877 and this was the time when economical growth for this beautiful city actually started. As of today the city of San Luis Potosí is growing immensely in terms of tourism and other industries.
