Puerto Escondido History, Mexico
It was in 1928 when this city of Puerto Escondido (which was actually a town during those years) was established. During those years the town of Puerto Escondido was actually the hub for shipping coffee from one place to another using its famous port. Due to its port Puerto Escondido gained recognition quickly in the eyes of various businessmen and helped the economy of Puerto Escondido raise in no time. The town of Puerto Escondido was amongst the first few tourist centers in the region of the “Emerald Coast”. This town was famous by the tag of Punta Escondida in the 19th century and also used to specialize in the shipping of quality wood, used for creating luxurious items.
Initially (during the years of 1920s) the town of Puerto Escondido was just a fishing village, regularly used for shipping precious wood and coffee. This does not mean that before this the city of Puerto Escondido was just another empty and barren land. For centuries, the land on which the city of Puerto Escondido is established today had been occupied by various indigenous inhabitants.
It was after the business port had been established and the coffee was being shipped that the town of Puerto Escondido actually started to grow economically. The city of Puerto Escondido started to face development once its port was popularized amongst various businessmen. This was the time when Federal Highway 200 was built in this small city of Puerto Escondido hence increasing its importance by many folds. It was during the 1960s when this Federal Highway was built on the sides of the Pacific Ocean thus helping the city get connected with many major neighboring cities.
One of the interesting legends that is still told in this city of Puerto Escondido is how it got its name. It was long ago when a young girl escaped from the clutches of the famous pirate Francis Drake and ran into the thick jungles of this land thus hiding from the pirates. Since then it became famous by the name of the hidden girl and hence later on this port was named the Hidden Port which in local language is Puerto Escondido.
