Oaxaca History, Mexico
The city of Oaxaca has been famous for the diversity in its culture and languages. The reason behind this diversity is the rugged terrain which was part of Oaxaca in the past. It was the fertility of Central Valley which became the major reason why so many powerful groups set here in the past. The central valley of Oaxaca was under the control of Zapotec People but later on during the 13th century it was the Mixtecs who took control of the valley.
As a different civilization emerged, different kinds of vegetables were cultivated like tomatoes, beans, corn, squash, and pumpkins. Other items which were also being successfully grown in the city of Oaxaca were zapotes, avocados, and maguey. This reflects how the various civilizations during the pre – Columbian period were developing as time was passing. They were quick learners and were implementing what they saw around them so as to develop something that was totally new for them.
In the southern region of Oaxaca the inhabitants were quick to use the proximity of the Pacific Ocean for different purposes. The city of Oaxaca is also famous as one of the oldest known human settlements in this city. It was the Zapotec village, near the city of Oaxaca, which is said to be the oldest human settlement on this planet.
It was the year 1521 when the Spanish Army entered the city of Oaxaca and took control of the city in no time. In 1532 the city of Oaxaca was officially tagged as a city and was named as Antequera de Guaxaca which is today used as a nickname. In 300 years, during which the Spanish Army controlled the city of Oaxaca, many things changed. In short the city of Oaxaca got a touch of European culture.
In 1821 the city of Oaxaca won its independence. This was actually the time when Mexico won independence from the clutches of Spanish Army and so did every city of Mexico. The city of Oaxaca remained an agricultural city for many years but in recent years it has developed quickly.
