Nuevo Laredo History, Mexico
It was the division of Villa de San Agustin de Laredo into two different cities, due to various political reasons, which became the major reason why the city of Nuevo Laredo was born. This city of Villa de San Agustin de Laredo was situated on two different sides of Rio Grande and this became the reason why different political leaders of this city couldn’t make a compromise splitting the city into two different halves. One of them was called Nuevo Laredo Mexico while the other became Laredo Texas.
As pointed above, the city of Nuevo Laredo was actually part of the real Laredo. The foundation for the real Laredo (with the original name Villa de San Agustin de Laredo) was laid by Don Tomás Sánchez (a Spanish leader) in the year 1755. He chose the northern section of Rio Grande as the location for this city. This city remained one for the next 100 years but the war that broke out in the year 1847 made the city of Villa de San Agustin de Laredo split into two halves.
In1848 the treaty of Hidalgo – Guadalupe was signed. This treaty officially declared the new boundaries for the newly formed cities. In this year many families that were living on the northern side of Rio Grande made up their minds to move to the other side as they never wanted to leave their customs and historical traditions. Hence around 17 families moved to the southern side of Rio Grande after these new borders were declared official.
The loyalty to their homeland can be seen from the fact that these families dug off various graves of their ancestors and took them with them so as to bury them in their newly declared homeland. This was the time when the famous slogan “Always with their homeland” became popular in the media and was attached to the city of Nuevo Laredo due to the patriotism its inhabitants showed. It was due to these 17 families that the city of Nuevo Laredo actually came into existence even though during those days the living conditions were close to none.
