Los Mochis History, Mexico
The foundation for the city of Los Mochis was laid by utopian Americans somewhere in the early years of 20th century. It was a civil engineer from U.S. (named Albert Kimsey Owen) who was responsible for building various ditches and different irrigation canals in and around the valley. This colony which was built under the terms of various socialist Americans ran successfully for the coming 3 decades.
Officially the city of Los Mochis was started somewhere in the year 1893 and the person responsible behind this was John F. Sanchez. He had come to this land with the sole purpose of starting his sugar cane business in this city. Later on sugarcane was responsible for the boom in population in the city of Los Mochis although the first sugarcane mill was started somewhere in the year of 1903. The foundation for this sugarcane mill was laid somewhere in the year 1898 by Benjamin Franklin Johnston. The year 1903 was the time when the first harvest came out of this sugarcane mill. This mill was firstly named as ‘The Eagle Sugar Refining Company’ which was later on changed and it was named as ‘United Sugar Company’.
It was Benjamin Franklin Johnston itself who created various roadmaps and other maps of this city. He created the maps just like the cities of America and soon work started on these maps. It was year 1903 when officially work started on these maps so as to organize these cities. It was year 1916 when the nearby town of Ahome was laid down so as to find place to live for the growing population. Later on, it was year 1935 when the tag of municipal capital for this city municipality was given to this city itself.
Some of the public institutions which were started after the economical growth of this city are The Technological Institute of Los Mochis, The Autonomous University of Sinaloa, the National Pedagogical University, and the University of the West Indian Autonomous University of Mexico.
Since its birth, the city of Los Mochis has experienced heavy changes and the economy of the city which used to depend just on sugarcane industries during the early times has slowly moved to many other niches. Tourism industry has become an important reason behind the strength of the economy.
