Ghadames Travel Guide, Libya

The city of Ghadames is part of Libya and is famous due to its calm atmosphere. The streets of this city are white, which gives them the refreshing look that you might not get in many other cities in the world. Ghadames is actually an oasis town, located in the western region of Libya. It is situated around 550 kilometers away from the south-western region of Tripoli. The borders of Tunisia and Algeria are located in its proximity.

Climate for Ghadames is similar to the rest of Libya, i.e. very hot and at times, it might become unbearable. Although most of the locals have moved into the modernized surrounding areas, started by the government in 1970s, most of them move back to Ghadames during the hot summer days due to the design of the buildings here. Extreme hard work and thinking was used before they were actually built. The positioning of the buildings is such that it fights the heat of the sun; and the temperature within them is low when compared to outside temperature. Ghadames has been quiet famous in Libya due to these traditional buildings.

The city of Ghadames is situated around 360 meters (which is around 1170 feet) above sea level. The city hardly experiences rain or snow and this is the major reason for the hot temperatures throughout the year. The maximum temperature touches 41 degree Celsius in July, which is the hottest month.

The older section of Ghadames has been tagged World Heritage site by UNESCO due to its historical richness. Around 7 clans lived here and each of them used to possess its own district, with its own public place where various festivals were regularly organized.

It is the beauty of the surrounding areas which adds up to the importance of Ghadames.
