The city of Sapporo is one of the newly built cities of Japan which initially had the population of only 7 inhabitants somewhere in 1857 but as of today the population touches around 2 million inhabitants. Cities of Japan which have population above 500000 inhabitants and have been recognized by the cabinet of the Japan government are said to be designated cities or government ordinance city. The city of Sapporo is also a Government Ordinance City. Hokkaidō happens to be the 2nd largest island in Japan and the city of Sapporo is the capital for this Hokkaidō prefecture.
The city of Sapporo is surrounded by natural boundaries from southern sides and western sides. Mountains like Maruyama, Mount Teine, and Mount Moiwa lie on these sides. Some rivers which pass by these two sides of Sapporo are River Sousei, River Toyohira, and River Ishikari.
The difference between the summer and winter temperatures is wide enough and this makes it difficult for the locals to adjust quickly with the changing temperatures. Summers are very hot while winters experience snow! Lots of snow related events are performed in various parts of the city during the winter season due to the abundance of snow during. The city of Sapporo is one of the rare metropolitan cities on this planet that experience so much snow fall (around 630 centimeters on an average). The average yearly temperature is around 8.5 degree Celsius.
The city of Sapporo also boasts of the famous beer of Sapporo. The manufacturing plant of Sapporo Breweries Limited is also located in the city of Sapporo itself. This increases the importance of this metropolitan city in the hearts of beer lovers.
Amongst the most famous cuisines for the city of Sapporo is the Soup Curry. It is a liquid curry that has various vegetables and some rice mixed into it. One will find many restaurants that specialize in this type of curry only thus reflecting the importance of this curry. Another famous cuisine is Sapporo Ramen and this is considered as one of the heritage cuisines for the Hokkaidō prefecture. The sweets of Sapporo City are also very famous in and around the city. Every year a competition for the best Sapporo Sweet is held and this attracts multiple tourists and sweet lovers.
