My hometown is now the fifth largest city in all Japan, but in 1857 its inhabitants numbered only 7 people. After it was chosen as an administrative center the town started to grow, and to expand and now today it is one of the largest, most visited cities of the country. The biggest boost to city's fame was given in 1972 when it became the host of the Olympic Winter Games. From that time on, the city is a major tourist gem.

The city has many attractions, including the Sapporo Beer Museum, the Botanic Garden, the Odori Park, the Nijo Market. It is a city worth visiting every season of the year. My favorite time of the year is winter and that is also the time of the Snow Festival (Sapporo Yuki Matsuri) held every Friday in February. During this period you can see huge, beautiful snow and ice sculptures, go snow rafting or snow golfing or just enjoy the busy, and wintry atmosphere of the town by a food stand. :)

Sapporo History

The land today on which the city of Sapporo is situated was under the control of Ainu settlements. This land was then known as Ishikari Plain. This was during 1857. Later on by 1866 construction work had started near the canal. This was the reason why so many settlers started to flock the city of Sapporo. The word Sapporo means a large river which runs through a flat area. This is exactly what the [...]
