Piazza Maggiore is one of the sights that Bologna has to offer. This piazza is a wide square that currently has several places for dining, relaxation, drinking, and exploration. Several street musicians gather around this piazza to entertain the visitors. Piazza Maggiore showcases several architectural structures of the medieval and Renaissance era.
Near Piazza Maggiore is the Fountain of Neptune (Fontana di Nettuno). Since its creation in 1566, the statue of Neptune is the favorite place to relax and the popular meeting place in Bologna. Another Bologna sight, the Basilica di San Petronio, is set on a Gothic style. This is the largest church in Bologna and the fifth in the world. Political issues interrupted its construction in 1392 and its original design was altered due to the intervention of the Vatican ruling that the church must not surpass the size of the pope’s residence.
Piazza di Porta Ravegnana has the highest towers in Bologna. The place offers a sight of the entire city and its neighbors. To have the best view, visitors can climb any of the two towers in the piazza—the Torre Asinelli and the Torre Garisenda. From the towers going northeast, visitors can see the University quarter that offers a collection of cafes and bars.
The University of Bologna, the oldest university in Europe and has managed to become one of the world’s most renowned centers for academics. Since its founding, 900 years ago, the University still attracts students from around the world. For academic tours, the university is always open and there are also some museums in the city that are very educational. These include the Archeological Museum, Medieval Museum, Museo della Tappezzeria, Museo Ducati, and Museo Morandi.
Sightseeing in Bologna can take you back to its origins. The Bronze Age, the medieval, Renaissance, and the modern ages, all of these are available in one city—Bologna.
