Bari History, Italy

Bari is one of the cities in Italy that has an interesting history. The history of the place is one thing that serves as an attraction for the visitors.

Bari, Italy is located on a small neck of land projecting the Adriatic, 69 m. N.W. of the place of Brindisi. Apulia, Italy  the capital of Bari’s province with 77,478 inhabitants in 1901. The place consists of two areas, which are the old town on the peninsula to the north and the new town on the south that is planned on the rectangular plan.

The S. Sabino cathedral was built in 1035, but was not finished until 1171. The fine architectures that are the campanile and the dome are preserved in this place, but the interior was renovated. The S. Nicola is just near the cathedral, established in 1087 in time of the reception of the saint’s relics that were moved in Myra, Lycia. The saint is kept in the altar in the catacomb now. S. Nicola church has a great frontage and interior. There are also four churches, which are the Palatine churches in Apulia, the Altamura and the Acquaviva cathedrals, and the Monte S. Angelo sul Gargano church. The S. Gregrio is the nearby church.

  In 1169 a castle, which is used as prison nowadays, was built and improved in 1233 and was positioned on the western side of the old town. The Ateneo is located in the new town where the provincial museum is located.

Bari is the most vital town in Apulia where  soaps, carbon sulphide, playing cards, and olive oil is manufactured. In 181 B.C., the harbor was known to be the most important one in the region during the ancient times and it is now the fishery hub. But the place was important during 852 when it became the place of the Saracen power and during 885 it became the governor’s home. During 1017, Robert Guiscard captured it and in 1095, Peter the Hermit held the initial campaign there.

Knowing the history of a place is a way to appreciate the place and it is also necessary before visiting in every place.
