Galway Travel Guide, Ireland
Galway - Overview
Also referred to as Cathair na Gaillimhe in Irish, the ancient town of Galway grew to one of the most visited tourist centres in Ireland. The town occupies a position on the west coast of Ireland. Galway's fitting location on the edge of the Gaeltacht makes it an ideal gateway to many scenic areas of the country - Connemara, Corrib Country and the Aran Islands. Though the city of Galway is ancient in character, it's witnessing a lot of modern-day developments. The theatres, university, cathedrals and hotels of Galway have become mostly popular with tourists from far and wide.
For nature lovers and travelers, Galway has a lot in store. Several freshwater lakes and rivers criss-cross the town while soaring mountain ranges dominating the skyline. Blue flag beaches in areas like Roundstone and Renvyle attract a lot of tourists. A major tourist attraction in the town, the Aran Islands beautifully dot the Galway coastline. The town of Galway is made up of yet smaller towns. Most famous among these include Athenry, Ballinasloe, Clifden, Gort, Loughrea and Tuam.
The town of Galway is also famously known as the 'City of Tribes'. Back in the 14th century, the town was ruled by a group of tribes. It is due to this tribal rule that Galway reflects an ancient character even today. There were a number of tribal families that reigned over the place. The famous ruler families include Athy, Blake, Bodkin, Browne, D'arcy, Deane, ffont, French, Joyce, Kirwan, Lynch, Martin, Morris, and Skerritt.
Galway is also the place to be for travelers who always crave to be a part of traditional festivals and celebrations. Events like Galway Races, Galway Arts Festival and Clarinbridge Oyster Festival give tourists a good opportunity to interact with locals and experience cross-country culture. Not only these, there are many more dance and arts festivals that compel travelers to visit here over and again.
