Baghdad Sights and Landmarks Guide, Iraq
Baghdad happens to be the capital of today’s war struck Iraq. Baghdad is famous for its rich history and it used to be one of the most famous tourist spots of the Middle East but recently Iraq fell under the clutches of war against the United States of America not once but many times and since then tourism business has fallen considerably in the city of Baghdad.
Still, Baghdad is famous for many historical monuments and its rich historical culture which has somehow become the reason why tourism in Baghdad didn’t completely die.
The National Museum of Iraq is one of the most famous tourism spots of this city. Problems crept in for this museum when very important artifacts and arches were stolen by thieves during 2003. Due to this, the importance of this museum has decreased in last couple of years.
The National Library was also one of the very famous tourist spots in Baghdad for those tourists who love to enhance their historical knowledge. But like other historically rich monuments, the National Library also faced the threat of thieves and they were somehow successful in running away with important manuscripts that proved the history of Baghdad. Since then the importance of this library has also considerably decreased.
Baghdad Tower is another famous tourist spot and a historical monument which has many stories attached to it. This tower was at a time the highest point of Baghdad and the entire city was visible from the top of the tower. During the recent war of Iraq against the United States of America, this tower was destroyed partially when the American armed forces bombarded Ma'amoon Telecommunication Center which is located very close to the Baghdad Tower. During the rule of Saddam Hussein this tower was officially known as Saddam Tower.
The Wax Museum of Baghdad which is also known as the Baghdad Museum is another famous tourist spot in Baghdad.
Another famous tourist hot spot in Baghdad is the two level bridge located in Jadriyah (official name Jisr Abul Tabqain). This bridge couldn’t be built during Saddam’s reign but recently the bridge was built during the reconstruction work of Baghdad.
