Manado in Sulawesi is a wonderland destination for the adventurous and the not so adventurous!

 

Diving in Manado is one of Indonesias’ best kept secrets!  Colorful nudibranchs, pipe fishes and seahorses roam amongst the soft coral and shipwrecks, as do fish such as big tuna, barracudas, manta rays and sharks.

 

Museums and Culture

The Culture Garden, located in Maengket Street, is the centre of cultural art activities with displays of traditional dance, music and singing. 

Negeri North Sulawesi Museum contains information, art and cultural exhibits depicting the ethnic history in North Sulawesi, including Gorontalo, and other regions.  There are also replica waruga, (ancient burial tombs used by early Minahasan tribes) to see.

 

A visit to Minahasa Highland is where you will see Minahasan Style Houses being built, knock down style, ready for delivery or shipping, or visit a traditional food & flower market in Tomohon.  Near Pulutan village, you can visit the Japanese WWII caves.

Tomohon is a small city, about 25 minutes from Manado and is surrounded by 3 active volcanoes (Mount Masarang, Mount Lokon and Mount Mahawu).  After passing through Tomohon, you arrive at the base of Mount Mahawu where you can take a 1hr trek to the craters’ edge.

Kali Waterfall is a short drive, on the way to Tomohon and here you will discover a rural village and enjoy a scenic walk to the two falls.  Be prepared for lots of windblown spray as the force of the water is quite fierce!

White Water Rafting is available about 1.5hrs from Manado, just outside the village of Sonder in the Minahasan highlands.

There are also many art galleries, jewelry stores and handicraft shops to explore.
