Chinese cuisine, seafood, local specialties…all these make Makasar a foodie’s paradise. Makasar nightlife cannot be described as real hot and happening and it will be a blunder if you compare it to that of Jakarta or even of Bandung. Actually, no two places are the same and so it is no use comparing. In spite of all this, there is no denying that the city has a few watering holes as well as night-time entertainment venues.

Makasar Nightlife – Bars and Drinking

Many area hotels and restaurants have adjoining bars. Take, for example, Kios Semarang; it not only serves good food and drink, its friendly ambience makes it the most popular drinking hole in Makasar. Other eateries like Lae Lae too have drinks among their offerings.

Makasar also has some independent bars like Kafe Kareba and Ballairate Sunset Bar. While the former is an outdoor beer garden standing just opposite to the Losari Beach Hotel, the latter has come up on the stilts on the sea and gives excellent sunset views.

There are a number of bars in the port area, but these have very less to do with civilized entertainment and it is advisable to avoid them.

Makasar Nightlife – Nightclubs

Makasar nightclubs promise you varied entertainment. There is band music as well techno/mix music by popular DJs, a lot of dancing, stunning bartending action and revelry. Drinks are available, but are needlessly overpriced. Hence, a far practical idea will be to gulp down a few drinks at a bar before hitting the dance-floor in a nightclub.

Some of the most frequented Makasar nightclubs are Ballezza Music & Lounge, Botol Music, Colors, Mansion Café, Pharos, Redtro’s D’Liquid, etc. Each one is special in its own way. Ballezza, for example, is famous for its music, food as well as drinks; being close to the seaside, it also gives nice views of the sea and the beaches. Botol Musik might sound music to your ears, but in reality it is a rather adult entertainment venue with erotic dances being its chief attraction. The same can be said of Mansion Café. Redtro’s D’Liquid has a quite different ambiance. It is the perfect night-spot for teenagers.

Most of Makasar’s nightclubs have their services till 3.00/4.00 a.m. But before you step into any of the area pubs or clubs, remember to be at the Losari beach. Makasar nightlife starts only after you bid adieu to the day watching sunset from the Losari beach. Thereafter, you can take a short walk to the nearby restaurants or pubs, before heading for a nightclub.
