As per the census 2001, the population of Solapur was 870000 inhabitants. The national literacy rate is about 60 percent while that of Solapur is around 67 percent.
Generally Marathi is spoken in Solapur as Marathi is the local language for the state of Maharashtra but this doesn’t mean that the remains of Hindi (national language of India) aren’t found in this city. Along with Marathi and Hindi the languages which are spoken by the inhabitants are Kannada, Telugu and Urdu also. English is also familiar language for the educated class.
Solapur is a city situated in the South Eastern state of India, Maharashtra. Although Solapur isn’t that important in terms of large scale industries, still some medium sized industries are located in and around Solapur. The North and South Indian Railway line also merges in this city and hence it happens to be important city for Indian Railways. Many cotton mills and various power loom industries are running successfully in the city of Solapur. The chaddar (which means bed sheet in English) of Solapur are very famous all around India. Their unique design and quality has always been appreciated all around the country.
Solapur is also famous for Nandidhwaj processions which are held every year during the fair of Makar Sankranti. Estimates say that this procession is attended by over a million Hindu devotees every year. It has slowly become an important ritual which is also attended by many tourists. Mostly the locals of Solapur consider Shri Siddeshwar as their chief deity.
Along with railway line Solapur also connects the roadways of Maharashtra with the neighboring states Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Solapur is situated very near to Karnataka and even Andhra Pradesh isn’t that far from the city. Due to this advantage Solapur has been connected by road to all the major neighboring cities thus making it easy for tourists and businessmen to easily enter and leave the city.
Akkalkot Swami Maharaj Math stays in Akkalkot and this has made Akkalkot a very important location in Solapur. It is said that every year huge chunk of Hindu devotees visit this place to pay homage to the famous saint. The complete Maharashtra and the neighboring Karnataka regularly visits this place.
