Pune (which was known as Poona in olden days) happens to be the second largest city of Maharashtra (state of India) and comes in position number eight when it comes to population of cities all over India. Pune has recently grown as an important industrial hub for India and many IT companies have their offices in and around Pune.

The name Pune is inspired from Punya Nagari which means “City of Virtue” in Sanskrit. Pune is located around 550 km above sea level and on the borders of Deccan Plateau. Sahyadri Mountain (also known as Western Ghats) is a natural border between Arabian Sea and the city of Pune. Pune has many hills located in and around the city. The highest hill within Pune is Vetal Hill which is around 800 meters high. Sinhagad Fort located on borders of Pune is itself located at the height of 1300 meters.

Pune has literally wet climate and its average temperature ranges from 20 degrees Celsius to 28 degrees Celsius. The summer timings are between March and May when maximum temperature can touch 43 degree Celsius. April happens to be the hottest month for Pune although the locals of Pune are forced to bear summers till May. The Rainy Season is between the months of June and October and during these months the temperature ranges between 10 degree Celsius and 28 degrees Celsius. Average annual rainfall is around 700 mm. Once, the inhabitants of Pune were caught in wild rain which continued for 29 days without any breaks. Winter continues between the months of November and February. Day temperature can reach 28 degrees Celsius while night temperature can go down to 5 degrees Celsius. Pune hasn’t ever experienced temperature below zero degrees Celsius.

Road, rail, and air are all used for transport by the inhabitants of Pune and those who visit it. As per a study conducted in 2007,  there were around 400000 cars and around 1.5 million two wheelers running on the roads of Pune. Around 200000 vehicles “land” on the road every year. A metro system similar to that of the capital of India has been proposed in Pune for the comfort of the locals. Pune Airport is a huge International Airport which connects Pune to the rest of this planet as well as the nation.
