History
Mumbai was formerly called Bombay and was once composed of 7 islands of the Ashoka Kingdom. It was later ruled by the Mohammedans and various Hindu rulers for more than 200 years. Later with the coming of the Europeans, Mumbai was later controlled by the Portuguese.
The city became a dowry to King Charles VI of England when he married Princess Catherine de Braganza of Portugal. This eventually paved the way for the British control especially of Queen Victoria.
