Kozhikode is better known as Calicut on the national level and it is part of South Indian state Kerala. Kozhikode happens to have the third highest population when compared to other cities of Kerala and hence has its own economical importance for Kerala. Kozhikode used to enjoy the status of capital city during the historical years. It was considered as capital for a famous kingdom as well as for the Malabar District.

The metropolitan population of this city is almost touching 1 million and this is what makes Kozhikode the third largest populated city of Kerala. The name of Kozhikode is a mix of two different words Koyil (which means palace) and Kodu (which means fortified). The other name Calicut is said to be the anglicized version of the real name Kozhikode. Theory says that Calicut used to be a very famous port which was used by the foreign traders for trading purposes. During those days there was a fort surrounding the port. This fort was called as Koyil (meaning palace) and Kotta (meaning fort) and this has to be the reason why the city got this name of Kozhikode.

Multiple rivers and lakes that are found in Kozhikode are Kallayi Puzha, Chaliyar Puzha, Poonoor Puzha, Kora Puzha, and Iravanjhi Puzha. These and many more flow through Kozhikode.

Agriculture is the major source of income for most of the locals in Kozhikode. Fishing is another business which could be considered important economy mover in this city of Kozhikode.
