Jaipur History, India
Astonishing architectural forms, palaces, forts, and stories of courage greet you upon visiting the pink city in India which is named Jaipur.
Established by Maharaja Jai Singh II in the year 1727, Jaipur is considered to be the first planned city of India. Jai Singh who ruled the nearby city of Amber decided to shift his capital city to Jaipur when he realizes that his previous capital city Amber experienced rapid growth in population and slowly becoming short of water supply. The King was greatly interested in designing his victory city, that he made a move in consulting famous architects and researched intensely using several architectural books before he finalized the lay out design of Jaipur.
Jai Singh was also very particular in keeping the city safe especially after experiencing a number of battles against the Marathas. With this, he wanted to design the city in a way that it has maximum security against invaders. Knowing that such design would be a bit complicated, he seeks advice from a Brahmin scholar by the name of Vidyadhar. The Brahmin scholar used the Indian books of astronomy, as well as the books of Euclid to help the king with his goal of designing the city according to the standards that he set.
After spending some time in coming up with a great plan to building the city, Jai Singh started construction of the city of Jaipur in the year 1727. The King and Vidyadhar decided to build the city in accordance to the Indian Architectural principles. The design was so grand that it took them around four years to complete the construction of the roads, square and the major palaces. Since the King was very keen in maintaining security to his city, huge barricade like walls were made surrounding the city. Inside the gates, there are nine blocks of different divisions of the city. Seven of these blocks were allotted to the public while the remaining two were allocated for the palaces and state buildings. Historical accounts claim that the architecture of the city was by far the most advanced and perhaps the best one could find in India during that time.
The city of Jaipur was called the Pink City because in the year 1853, the entire city was painted pink to welcome the arrival of the Prince of Wales. The clean and widely laid-out roads of the city painted in pink enhanced the city’s magical touch. Even now, the city of Jaipur maintains its beauty that wins the peoples’ hearts with its impressive charms.
