Indore Travel Guide, India

Indore Travel Guide: An Introduction

Indore, the summer capital of the erstwhile state of Central India, is one of the busiest travel destinations in India. The strongest point about Indore travel is that the city has everything – great natural beauty, pleasant climatic conditions as well as rich cultural heritage and history – and that is what makes it a great place to be in, to see and do interesting things. In addition, the largest city of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh has excellent transportation infrastructure as well as accommodation facilities to support tourism.

Indore Travel Guide: Architectural Heritage

Steeped in history, Indore has a rich architectural heritage and here you get to see influences of Maratha, Mughal, Colonial and even Art deco architectural styles. The seat of the Holkar rulers, the city has many temples and monuments that give you a taste of the architectural splendor of those times.

The Old Palace, better known as the Rajwada, is a nice blend of different architectural styles – French, Maratha and Mughal. The Lal Bagh Palace and the Chattri Bagh are among the other important architectural wonders built under the Holkar rulers. Among the other architecturally significant structures in the city are Kanch Temple, (a Digambar Jain temple famous for its colored glass-work), Bada Ganapati Temple, The Annapurna Temple and The Town Hall. Indore’s shopping malls like the C21 Mall (a 10-storey mall), M2K Mega Mall, Orbit, Treasure Island and others are good examples of contemporary architecture.

Indore Travel Guide: Infrastructure and Economy

Indore’s repute as a vacation destination has largely to do with the fact that the city is well-connected by railways, roadways and air-traffic. The city’s airport, Devi Ahilyabai Holkar International Airport, is served by major airlines operating in India that have flights connecting Indore to a number of Indian cities like New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Nagpur, Ahmedabad, Bhopal and other cities. Similarly, the Indore railway station is a major stop for trains coming from/traveling to other Indian cities/towns. Speaking of roadways, Indore has many state and national highways running through it. Buses, autos, taxis and local train services are available for traveling within city-limits. Indore’s Atal Indore City Transport Service Limited that runs special low floor buses for disabled people is yet another strong-point of Indore travel. As far as accommodation is concerned, Indore offers you many choices of hotels in different price-ranges. Bhopal may be the capital of the state of Madhya Pradesh but it is Indore that takes the credit of being the commercial capital. Indore has long been a hub of agriculture-based businesses (like cotton production and export) and other traditional businesses (like textile mills, etc.), but now, IT companies and other commercial ventures are contributing to Indore’s economy.

Indore Travel Guide: People and Culture

Indore is a truly cosmopolitan city, where people belonging to various ethnic and linguistic groups live in peace. Hinduism and Islam are followed by a large-section of the populace but followers of Jainism are found, too. People are open-minded and cordial. Hindi is the most commonly used language (although people speak in various languages) but English is also well-understood and used by some.
