Bhopal is located right in the center of India and is part of Madhya Pradesh (a state in central India). Bhopal comes after Indore as per population when compared to all cities of Madhya Pradesh. Bhopal is full of huge number of lakes many of which are natural while some have been made by humans for various purposes. Due to the large number of lakes, Bhopal is also called as the City of Lakes.
Bhopal State was an Indian State between 1949 and 1956. During those days, Bhopal was the capital of this state. Lately this state merged with Madhya Pradesh and Bhopal lost its status of capital city.
Bhopal experiences sub - tropical climate throughout the year. The months between April and June bring in hot summers for the city while winters arrive between the months of November and February. Monsoon season starts during the month of July and ends somewhere in September.
Bhopal became a hot topic on the International front when some Union Carbide pesticide plant somehow leaked around 40 tonnes of MIC (Methyl Isocyanate) gas. This leakage was so severe that it killed around 4000 locals within few hours. This was named as Bhopal Disaster and it is one of the most severe disasters of the world. This disaster occurred in the early hours of 3 December, 1984. The positive impact of this disaster was that now the people of Bhopal are very serious towards environment and the impacts of today’s technology on our planet.
Bhopal is also the center for Master Control Facility which was established by ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization) in the region of Ayodhya Nagar. This was established on April 11, 2005. This Facility has only one more center in the country thus making it clear how important Bhopal has become on the national front.
Bhopal is also one of the cities (amongst six in total) where new branches of All India Institute of Medical Science will be opened. Currently the only branch is in Delhi. Construction work has already begun for the same.
