Szentendre History, Hungary
Szentendre, a much beloved tourist destination in Hungary, is a small town of 20,000 people situated in Pest County, very close to the capital. Its metropolitan area–position and easy accessibility from the capital serve as starting point for a trip from Budapest. After having exploited the Budapest Travel Guide and Budapest Nightlife tours and enjoyed the vividness of the city, another kind of liveliness - and calmness at the same time - will do you good. Of course, you do not have to be around of Budapest to visit Szentendre. No matter where you are, this little town on the banks of the Danube, at the feet of the Pilis Mountains, surrounded by a beautiful landscape, is really worth your time.
Szentendre History – Insight into the Town’s History
Thanks to its favorable geographical position, the town has been inhabited for over a millennium, giving home to Illyrians, Romans, Celtic tribes, Lombards and Avars, and Hungarians of course. Since the 16th century, the Hungarian Serbs have found their home here. Bulgarians have also been a significant minority group in Szentendre and its environs since the Middle Ages.
The town suffered serious destruction during the conquest of the Mongols in the 13th century and then later in the 15-16th centuries by the Turks. However, after the liberation from the Turkish rule, in the 18th century, a much needed restoration of the town took place, marking the time when the fine Baroque architecture of Szentendre started. It was also in this period that other minorities came to town: Slovak, Croatian, Greek and German people, who all contributed to the special image of the place. Especially the Slavic – mainly Serb - influence can be felt in the façade of Szentendre, which can be characterized by a strong Mediterranean atmosphere, unique in Hungary.
Szentendre History – Multiculturalism in the Town of Arts
The ethnical and religious diversity that resulted from the settlement of all these minorities, is clearly noticeable considering the numerous churches belonging to different religions, and is a trademark of Szentendre. Of course, besides this multicultural aspect, the famous Mediterranean feeling and the Baroque architecture would definitely be among the keywords as well if we like to draw a conclusion on Szentendre History and town characteristics.
Furthermore, it must be underlined that Szentendre is considered and proudly called the town of arts and museums, a feature that strengthens even more the attractive force of this delightful little town, a town you just have to see!
