Miskolc is a city immersed in prosperity, culture, and history. It is considered as one of the most celebrated cities in Hungary offering many places to explore, dine in, and relax. Miskolc Sights – City of Art and Culture
Since the late 1990s, the city of Miskolc has worked to be able to present the city to the whole world as a center of culture and the arts. With this, museums and theaters were restored and taken cared of so that everyone, tourist or resident, was able to experience a part of the city’s culture and arts.
Otto Herman Museum. Known as the biggest museum in Miskolc, the Otto Herman Museum houses more than 600,000 pieces in archaeology, arts, ethnography, mineralogy, and history. The museum is divided into different buildings. Another building is found on Gorgey Street and it includes the storerooms, the arts museum and the library.
Csodamalom Babszinhaz. Also known as Magic Mill Puppet Theater, it was established in 1986 by Tibor Korzsenyi, a puppeteer. The company performs two to three premiers from the 50-play repertoire every year. The performances of the Magic Mill are mostly based on classical folk tales. Aside from this, they also play puppet pantomimes for grown-ups, and musical puppet shows.
Miskolc Sights – Historical and Cultural Landmarks
Miskolc has plenty of landmarks they take pride in and serve as the main attractions in the city. From marvelous castles to tranquil churches, Miskolc Sights has them.
Castle Diosgyor. Found in the historical Diosgyor, a part of Miskolc, this medieval fortress was constructed in the 13th century. The government ordered the restoration of the castle in 1953. Today, tourists can visit the northeastern tower where an exhibition showing the history of the castle is displayed. The north-western tower is also open and people can see a view of Diosgyor and the hills surrounding it. Visitors can also go to the south-western tower that is in ruins. Lastly, waxwork exhibitions are also present in the outer castle. This part is the most visited by tourists.
Gothic Protestant Church. This is the oldest infrastructure found in downtown Miskolc. Originally a Catholic church in the 13th century, it became a Protestant church during the Reformation. Tourists will find the organ which was built in 1895 inside the church. They will also be able to see the belfry that was constructed in 1557.
Miskolc Sights – Caves
Miskolc and its neighboring towns and cities (check Budapest Sights) are popular for its caves. Some of which are used as spas and baths.
Anna Cave. This is a natural limestone cave found near a waterfall. It is open throughout the year. Visitors can see with beautiful limestone structures and preserved fossils of plants.
Cave Bath. This is a natural cave with a thermal bath and is the only one of its kind in Europe. The water used in the cave is known to cure pain in the joints. People are allowed to soak in the water for a longer period of time since its salt content is much smaller than other thermal waters. The Cave Bath is open all throughout the year except for January.
