Eger Travel Guide – A fascinating City
One of the most charming cities in Hungary, Eger, situated in the north of the country, east of the Mátra Mountains, is definitely a foremost tourist destination. Its location, its famous castle, a rich variety of fine monuments and historical buildings, luring thermal baths and reputed wine culture, are all part of the special atmosphere that welcome visitors arriving to Eger.
Inhabited since the Stone Age, the city has encountered a rich historical past. The 1552 siege of Eger remains one of the most spectacular moments in the history of Hungary. The famous battle in which the 2,000 defenders of the castle miraculously withheld the Turkish army of 80,000 soldiers, is colorfully described by renowned 19th century Hungarian author Géza Gárdonyi in his 1899 novel “Eclipse of the Crescent Moon”. The cult of the novel vitally contributed to the boom in the city tourism and the popularity of Eger.
However, Eger came under Turkish in the 17th century, receiving thus a change in the townscape with the appearance of minarets, public baths and of course the church-replacing mosques. Some of these buildings have survived the passing of time and history, now giving even more color to the façade of the city. The 40 meters high Minaret and the Turkish Bath are certainly the most significant buildings from that era.
Eger is well known for the diversity its monuments display. Starting from the above mentioned Turkish curiosities through the Classicist styled cathedral to the Baroque town center, the visitor can be amazed by the variety and beauty of the fine architectural pieces. And we have not mentioned yet the very symbol of Eger: the castle. Just as Buda Castle is high in the list Budapest Travel Guide or Budapest Sights, such is this imposing castle in Eger, a major representative point and a powerful driving force luring tourists to visit the city, so much that the castle makes Eger one of the most visited cities in Hungary, probably the most visited after Budapest.
