Karpathos happens to be situated between two different Greek Islands namely Crete and Rhodes. Situated on the aegean Sea this island is the second largest of all the Greek Dodecanese Islands. Two major political bodies that make up this island are the community of Olympus and the municipality of Karpathos. Olympus also contributes to a section of Saria Island. The island of Karpathos is also known by many other names like Kerpe (in Turkish), Carpathus (in Latin), and Scarpanto (in Italian).
The island of Karpathos is located around 47 kilometers from the famous Island of Rhodes. Carpathian Sea (also known as Mare Carpathium) is the part of the Mediterranean Sea in which these Islands are located. Karpathos is made up of around 10 different villages. It is the presence of these villages that the culture of Karpathos is still preserved as it is followed with all dedication in these villages. If these villages weren’t the part of Karpathos then modernization might have take this Island to places where culture just doesn’t exist.
The capital city and the major port for this island of Karpathos is Pigadia (which is officially known as Karpathos City). This capital city is surrounded by different villages namely Pyles, Othos, Volada, Aperi, Arkasa, and Menetes. Another port which increases the importance of Karpathos is Diafani which is situated in the northern side of the island. The last village in the northern section of Karpathos is Olymbos. This village is famous due to its architectural interest and the cultural folklore.
The island of Karpathos is gifted with its own international airport which has a huge runway thus making way for international flights. It is situated in the Afiartis area of Karpathos. This airport connects the city of Karpathos with the neighboring islands as well as with major cities located in its proximity. Even chartered flights are also scheduled from various European countries. Most of the city and the surrounding areas are connected by a complex network of paved roads. You can also use municipal buses or fixed rate taxis.
