Cologne Travel Guide, Germany

Cologne is found in the North Rhine-Westphalia German state, near the Rhine River found between Dusseldorf and Bonn.  The place was founded by Romans and is regarded as one of the oldest cities in Germany.  Ranking fourth in terms of land area in the state of Germany, Cologne is home to almost 2 million people.

Travel

If you are planning to take a look at the place, a tourist office is found in Unter Fettenhennen 19 which is situated southwest of the train station.  The office would cater to your every need as you visit the place and is open from 9 AM to 10 PM during summer and 9 AM to 9 PM during winter. Take note, however, that on Sundays and public holidays, the office is open from 10 am to 6 PM only.  They will take charge of hotel reservations for your stay in Cologne.  The Cologne Tourist Office will also provide you with a full-colored map which gives you the convenience of touring the entire city.

The people of Cologne and neighboring city of Bonn are served by the Koln Bonn Airport.  A bus service from the main train station in cologne is available every 15 minutes as the distance from the station to the airport is around 17 km.

The Cologne Central Station is a very large train station and is considered one of the important rail cores in Europe.  It is strategically located near pedestrian shopping areas and in the city’s Cathedral.  You may buy German Rail Passes at discounted prices around Germany alone and in neighboring countries. 

Climate

Cologne has fair winters as the place seldom experiences snow.  Summer, however, is blazingly hot and humid.  A good idea to visit the place is during fall as it poses the best climate for the area.  This is also a period when hotels give discounts for its patrons, that is from September to October. 

Library and internet access

Cologne is one of the cities gifted with a modern library and internet equipments.  You may get a free internet access by visiting one of the biggest libraries in Germany, the Cologne Public Library.  The library is situated at StadtBibliothek Koln.  You may have wireless connection enabling you to reach your friends and relatives from all over the world.  You may also have in hand the latest in international news with the international newspapers found in the library.

Introduction to Cologne’s attractions

For anybody who is interested in experiencing the Cologne carnival, the season starts on November 11 of each year, but hotel rates are a little bit high.  The main event of the carnival known as the “three mad days” may be witnessed around Easter, particularly the Thursday before the beginning of Lent.

Cologne is the home of the famous Cologne Gothic Cathedral which according to the place’s history took 600 years to complete.  The place is one of UNESCO’s world heritage sites.

You may also want to experience the Rhine Boat Trips which could help you avail of longer excursions in the place.  You may also see the Roman antiques - way back from the first to fourth centuries - at the Roman-German Museum.  The museum embraces the 230-foot mosaic of Dionysus, Roman god of wine.
