Dijon History, France

Dijon, History – Early Times

Dijon History began quite late compared to the “birth” of other French cities, as this Roman settlement known as Castrum Divionese, has many times been destroyed by numerous attacks and fires. The town is considered to date from 1015, when Robert I decided to settle the capital of his duchy here. This has helped Dijon turn into a place of extraordinary wealth and social power and one of Europe’s most important centers of culture and art, science and learning. Unfortunately, this blooming period didn’t last long, as in 1137 a terrifying fire destroyed almost the entire city. Duke Hughes II was involved in the reconstruction of the town.

Dijon, History – Middle Times

The dukes of Burgundy continued to play a tremendous role in Dijon History, as their interest and personal and financial involvement in this realm led to the development of the city’s cultural heritage, of manufacturing and trading. Rich merchants started to expand their businesses in this area, building houses which you can now admire along Vauban, Berbisery and Verrerie streets. Nonetheless, this period came to an end when Louis XI decided to integrate the duchy in the kingdom of France, which made the population angry and restless. The king promised to respect their freedom and rights and in the following years did his best to keep his promise.

Dijon, History – Nowadays

Starting with the 17th century, Dijon entered the period of urbanization. Many important architects rebuilt important buildings in town, rich people helped at the construction of amazing houses and one century later the city was proclaimed the Episcopal Seat. The construction of the railway, linking Paris to the Mediterranean via Dijon represented a huge step forward for the town and its people. The demography almost doubled and the industry developed.

During the Worlds Wars, it fell under the Nazy Germany’s occupation, but in 1944, the joint forces of France, UK and US gave back its freedom.

Nowadays, Dijon is an important university center, the seat of the Court of Appeals, bragging with its safety and cleanness. The food industry developed to a great length, the city being famous for its delicious mustard. It also attracts a large number of tourists, interested in the amazing architecture speaking about an agitated but glorious past. Its historic charm, perfect location in the heart of Burgundy, great fame for the delicious wines and the beautiful villages around has convinced everybody that France is indeed a blessed realm.
