Rauma Sights and Landmarks Guide, Finland
Known as the third oldest town in Finland, Rauma has its reputation as a haven for real shoppers and gourmets. The town is especially popular during the months of summer when the marketplace becomes a well-liked meeting location for residents and visitors alike. The town’s most famous area is the Old Rauma because it was able to preserve the medieval wooden town area. The Old Rauma is one of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites. Rauma Sights – Famous Landmarks
Many of the tourist attractions found in Rauma are landmarks which stood the test of time. Just like in Pori Sights, churches, memorials and old houses are some of the places people always explore when visiting the town.
The Church of the Holy Cross. In the late 1400s, this church of the former Franciscan monastery was constructed. The church, which is mainly made of gray granite, has two aisles presenting murals and frescoes from The Middle Ages. The white tower of the church was constructed in 1816 functioned as a signpost for seafarers.
Ruins of the Church of the Holy Trinity. Just like the Church of the Holy Cross, this church was built during the 1400s and served as the parish church of Rauma. However, the Church of the Holy Trinity was burned down during a fire in 1640.
Alfred Kordelin’s Burial Chapel. Completed in 1921, this chapel is found at Rauma’s Old Cemetery. It was designed by Lara Sonck and is owned by the Rauma parish since 1924.
Rauma Sights – Museums
The town of Rauma is not just famous for its churches and memorials, it is also known for its museums which display a wide variety of art, photograph, and design collections created by notable artists from the region. One way of experiencing the culture of Rauma is exploring the museums the town has to offer. Do not forget to visit these Rauma Sights.
Homestead Museum Muina. This museum is found in the village of Vasarainen. Visitors are greeted with a peasant square area set in an authentic rustic environment. The museum itself has a compilation of 1600 articles about the 19th and 20th century country life in Rauma. Homestead Museum Muina is open during summer.
Rauma Art Museum. Found at the Pinnala building, this museum is bordered by a closed courtyard, which also provides art exhibitions. Most of the artworks found on display in this art museum are from the Rauma and Baltic regions. The most remarkable displays are the Exhibition of Electronic Art, with latest expressionism forms, and the Rauma Biennale Balticum, contemporary art from the region.
Lonnstrom Art Museum. The museum can be found in the old Town Hall. This museum includes collections of fine art, design, photography, architecture and environmental art.
