Vejle Travel Guide – The City of the Fjord
Vejle is a delightful town in Denmark which lies at the head of Vejle Fjord 22 miles from Billund and 50 miles from Odense.. It is also the capital city of Region Syddanmark in south-east of Jutland Peninsula. The city of Vejle has around 50,210 inhabitants.
Its actual name comes from the old word ’wæthelæ’, which means ’fjord’, probably because of its location at a main crossroads at the fjord over Vejle River.
Vejle is supposed to have been founded in 1256, the year when the town was first mentioned as being established, but it is believed to be probably older. Throughout its history, the town has contributed to the economical development of the area as being an important merchant town at a busy crossroads. At present, it is still playing a significant role as an important junction for road and rail transport.

Vejle houses the Vejle Boldklub, which was the leader of Danish football championship for a few times in the past. The club plays in red shirts and white shorts. Its home ground, Vejle Stadion, is located in Nørreskoven, the northern part of the city, beautifully surrounded by forest. Great football players like Allan Simonsen and Thomas Gravesen belonged to Vejle Boldklub.
