Vejle History, Denmark
Vejle is a town located in the Syddanmark Region in Denmark. It is the location of both the Vejle Municipality and the region’s council. The town’s beginnings are portrayed in Vejle History.
Vejle History – Establishment as a Town
Older versions of the term Vejle were Wæthelaæ and Wæthlæ which mean ford. This is due to the fact that the town is found at a ford over Vejle River. In 1256, Vejle was first mentioned and in 1327, the town was given the first recognized municipal charter. However, it is perceived that the town itself is perhaps older. The southern part of the town was the first one developed and later it expanded to the north.
Vejle History – The Market Town
Vejle became a significant market town for many artisans and traders during the Middle Ages until around the middle of the 1600s. It is very likely that the first residents of the town were the traders and craftsmen who made their living at the town.
The town developed significantly in the world of trading. Vejle was able to broaden its services to the surrounding municipalities and farming became an important source of income for the residents. The town was able to trade with cities like Flensberg and Lubeck found in Germany.
Vejle History – Era of Stagnation
Like other municipalities and cities in Denmark, Vejle was not able to escape the cruelty of plague and war which occurred in the 17th and 18th centuries. The town’s population shrank and the economy slightly dropped. In 1654, Vejle barely avoided losing its title as the municipal charter to Federicia.
Vejle History – Regaining Status
At the end of the 18th century, Vejle experienced a comeback from the problems that hit the town. Developments were once more under way and in 1796, Vejle became the center of the newly established Vejle County. During the 19th century, the town experienced further expansions and improvements. Harbors, railroad stations, railways and up to date facilities were constructed and established in the town. Because of Vejle’s progress, people once again started to move to the town. The number of population rose. The town changed from a provincial market town into an active industrial hub.
During these developments, Vejle was not spared from a few problems. Because of the population growth, the town faced housing and boundary problems. The local government was quick to solve these setbacks. The territory of Vejle was expanded into the hills surrounding it where housing for the growing population was built.
Vejle History – Politics
Since the 20th century, Vejle has been one of the biggest supporters of the Social Democratic Party and trade unions. However in 1994, the Social Democrats’ monopoly in Vejle was broken when a candidate from the Socialist People’s Party was elected mayor of the town.
Vejle History helped the town become triumphant after each struggle. As it placed itself in the map of Denmark, Vejle is also becoming one of the most sought-after places in Europe. More stories on the continent are given in detail by Aalborg History and Copenhagen History.Things about Vejle you may be interested in
