Olomouc is a charming city in central Moravia 44 miles from Brno and the most important historic preservation site outside Prague. Its population of about 110,380 inhabitants is quite proud with their beautiful city which abounds in majestic churches and awesome palaces.
Its historical origin goes back to Roman imperial times when it is said that the city occupied a site of a Roman fort. It is also known that Olomouc was an important centre during the Great Moravian Empire in the 9th century. But it was founded as the city itself in the middle of the 13th century. The Column of the Holy Trinity rises in the main square, Horní námÄ›stí, representing a unique sculptural style for which it was listed in UNESCO World Heritage. The upper square also hosts the Astronomical Clock as being part of the town hall. It’s worth being seen for its daily mechanical performance at noon. The seventh fountain is located in the main square. It is much more modern in comparison to the other six old Baroque ones, which represent Roman gods and Julius Caesar, supposed to be the legendary founder of the city.
Olomouc is also known for its gorgeous churches and cathedrals. It may be said that there you can find a church or a chapel around every corner. The most impressive of all is St. Wenceslas Cathedral which seems to reach the sky with its tallest spire in Moravia.

The Zoo, located on a hillside, overlooks the city and hosts lots of animals, of which almost 50 are endangered species.
