Bjelovar is a rather young city first mentioned in the 15th century, but it became more important in the 18th century when a fort was constructed at the request of the ruler Maria Theresa and it was meant to stop the attacks of the Turks towards the centre of Croatia. It is situated in the north-western part of Croatia, being the administrative centre of Bjelovar-Bilogora. It was only in 1874 when the city became a free royal town.

Bjelovar has more than 40 thousand inhabitants and it is to be found at the junction of some main roads, motorways and a direct railroad that connect the city to the capital city Zagreb but also to other important tourist destinations like Split. Bjelovar has 191,9 km2 and it represents the main cultural and political centre of the whole region.
