Bjelovar Sights – Culture and Events

The beautiful Bjelovar located 46 miles from Zagreb and 108 miles from Osijek is home for many cultural and historical events that take place every year, gathering local personalities and tourists from everywhere. To increase the number of public events the local authorities are planning to transform a branch of the University of Zagreb into galleries, an exhibition place and a center that is meant to serve the business and cultural fields of the town.

Terezijana is a well known summer festival that lasts a few days and it attracts many tourists as it celebrates the entrance of Maria Theresa into town. Many parades, a lot of food and drink, good quality music, theatrical performances, sports events, souvenirs that remind us of those times, are all part of an entire show that you can not miss if you organize a trip in town at the end of June.

At the beginning of autumn, Bjelovar is home for a livestock exhibition that is considered to be the biggest in the country, gathering local and foreign farmers.

Bjelovar Sights mentions the local market as a must see place and event for the fact that the farmers bring traditional homemade cheese named “prgica”, sausages, bakery products, good quality wines, fresh fruits and vegetables or clothes to the delight of the buyers. Every Thursday and Saturday, the traditional days as the locals called them many centuries ago, both locals and tourists are expected to taste, smell and enter the atmosphere of food making.

Every spring, in Bjelovar the theatre festival called “Bok” is organized that has the purpose of bringing in front of the spectators a resume with the best plays that have been seen during the last year, dedicated to both adults and children.

Other important events are: the Bjelovar Fair and the Christmas Concert organized as a tradition every year in December and considered the most appreciated concert of this kind in Croatia.

Bjelovar Sights – Important Touristic Attractions

Just as many other cities in Croatia, Bjelovar has a wonderful town square but when comparing it with others in the country, the Bjelovar Square won for good the title of the best designed and taken care of square.

Other touristic attractions in town are considered to be: the Civic Museum with its beautiful ethnographic collection, the Memorial Area Barutana, built in the memory of the victims of the 1991 War of Independence, the Memorial Area Lug and the Memorial Area Borik.

There is a gallery of wooden sculpture called “Light Stripes” founded 7 years ago to show the beauty of local wood sculpting. The wooden sculptures are placed in the whole area of the Bjelovar forests.

The Public Library “Petar Preradovic” from 1946 is one of those libraries that any Croat would be proud to have in his town, but this one from Bjelovar is rich in space and book offers. It was completely renovated 8 years ago and it has today more pavilions and rooms for reading and resting or surfing on the internet, and special places and events dedicated to children, all of them being very appreciated by both young and old people.

Bjelovar Sights can not be complete without mentioning the traditional city bakeries that offer fresh bakery goods in the whole town every day.

As a conclusion, Bjelovar has many public events, festivals and a few attractions that contribute to the complete image of a ready to be visited town.
