Barranquilla Travel Guide, Colombia
Barranquilla is a city situated in Northern Colombia next to the Caribbean Sea. Colombia (with its official name Republic of Colombia) is a country that is part of North Western region of South America. Barranquilla happens to be the largest industrial location across the Colombian Caribbean Coast. Barranquilla comes in position number four as per total population with respect to complete Colombia. As it is located next to the Caribbean Sea, it has a port located on the delta of Magdalena River and thus it becomes an important city for Colombia. The city is also famous for its carnival and hence it is also known as the cradle of Colombian aviation due to the carnivals that are held in the city.
Climate of Barranquilla is extremely hot and humid. Temperatures during the day can reach 32 degrees Celsius although the trade winds which blow between November and April cool the atmosphere during the day to some extent.
Barranquilla is also the center for many universities like Universidad del Atlántico, Universidad del Norte, Universidad Autónoma del Caribe, Universidad Metropolitana, Corporación Universitaria de la Costa, and Universidad Simón Bolívar thus attracting a huge number of students from across the nation.
The streets of Barranquilla are called Calles while the avenues are called Carreras. The Magdalena River borders the city from the east while a bypass called as Circunvalar borders the city from the west. Downtown Barranquilla is situated next to the river thus making it an interesting place to visit at least once.
Mostly buses and taxis are used by the general public to travel from one place to another within the city. The major bus terminal is located nearby Murillo Street and a new project named Transmetro was launched so as to give special roads to the buses. This project has considerably brought down the traffic of the city.
Ernesto Cortissoz International Airport is the one that connects Barranquilla to the rest of Colombia as well as to the rest of the planet. Mostly, the flights of Ernesto Cortissoz International Airport are operated by Avianca (which has been the major airline of Colombia for about the last 90 years).
The culture of Barranquilla is comprised of different kinds of music, literature (Gabriel García Márquez, the Nobel Prize winner used to live in Barranquilla during his early days of journalism), sports, arts, fashion, and various festivals.
