Like most of the cities in People’s Republic of China, Zibo is also a prefecture level city. Such a city is the one that has its administration above the administration of a county but below the administration of a province. Prefecture level cities in China form the 2nd level of administration in the tree of administration levels.

Zibo is part of Shandong province which is a coastal level province also famous by the name of Lǔ (a state of Lǔ used to exist in this region in historical years and hence Shandong was called as Lǔ in short). The capital city for Province of Shandong, the city of Jinan, lies to the western side of Zibo. This proximity with the provincial capital has increased the importance of Zibo in terms of politics and economy. The city of Dongying borders Zibo from the north eastern side, the city of Weifang borders Zibo from eastern side, the city of Linyi borders the city from the southern side, and the city of Binzhou borders the city from the northern side.

The city of Zibo has been divided into eight county level parts out of which five are districts (namely Linzi, Zichuan, Boshan, Zhangdian, and Zhoucun) and rest three are counties (namely Gaoqing, Huantai, and Yiyuan).

The city of Zibo has played an important role during the historical years for the movement of silk from one place to the other. Even the so called Silk Routes used to start from the city of Zibo itself. Silk Routes were pathways which were for the transfer of many products along with silk during the historical years. These Silk Routes (spread throughout Asia) connect Mediterranean Sea to People’s Republic of China. They had been used for thousands of years by various pilgrims, merchants, traders, and soldiers etc. and they were responsible for increasing the importance of China on the international level.

Zibo is still an important trader of silk and it is famous in complete China for its silk products and their quality. It is the silk business which has helped the District of Linzi to grab 1st rank in terms of GDP when compared to other cities of Shandong Province.

The city of Zibo has excelled well in terms of education too and as of today its university is famous in complete Shandong. Both, the university as well as the government run college, are part of Zhangdian District.
