Urumqi Travel Guide, China

Ürümqi is one of those cities for the People’s Republic of China which is part of an autonomous region. People in an autonomous region possess the power to elect their own local government which has much more administrative rights than the rest of the provincial governments. In all there are five autonomous regions in China and the city of Ürümqi is part of Xinjiang Uyghur autonomous region. Ürümqi is actually the capital of this autonomous region and is also famous by the names of Ürümchi or Wulumuqi (the English version).

The name of Ürümqi is written in the Guinness Book of World Records as it is the only city that is placed around 2500 kilometers from the sea side. The city spreads over an area of around 11000 square kilometers with the population of around 2100000 inhabitants. An autonomous region always has high population of minority ethnic groups and similarly the city of Ürümqi has more than 75% Han Chinese. The average temperature in summers is around 25 degree Celsius and the average temperature for winters is around -16 degree Celsius.

The city of Ürümqi has around eight administrative divisions, which makes the governing of this city much easier for the local government. Out of these 8 units there are around seven districts and a single county.

The city of Ürümqi is one of the most important industrial hubs for the autonomous region Xinjiang. Two other major leaders in the industrial market for Xinjiang are Bayin’gholin and Karamay. These three cities contribute around 65 percent of the total industrial income for the Xinjiang autonomous region. The city of Ürümqi keeps improving the per year income by around 18 percent which is huge when it comes to individual growth of any city.

The Trade and Foreign Economic Relations Fair of Ürümqi has been successfully organized in this city since 1991. This fair attracts huge number of attendees from various corners of China which includes many representatives from multiple organizations and different government employees.

The industrial growth of Ürümqi has attracted many educational institutions and many of them have started to open their branches in the city. There are around 6 government funded universities too in this city of Ürümqi. Transportation is available in all forms like Rail, Road, and Air.
