Chengdu China History
The city of Chengdu dates back to the 4th century BC, when Kaiming King brought his capital to the city’s current spot. Over the years, the city has been taken over by many different groups of people and has been incorporated into many different provinces. The city has been infused with weary escapees during major wars. These events have built Chengdu into the major economic hub it is today.
Over the years, Chengdu has been the center of many developments that affect the life and culture of its inhabitants today. It has been known as the birthplace of the “Caotang” or grass hut known as a traditional style of house for many generations. Chengdu was also the originating point for paper money that is still used all over the world today. Chengdu is also known as one of the first cities to launch a major retaliation against Japan, when the city allowed American troops to form a major base in the fight against Japan. Today, Chengdu is the home base for the Chengdu Military Region.
Perhaps the biggest upset in recent history was in May of 2008. An earthquake measuring 8.0 on the Richter scale struck, causing significant damage to the area. As of 24th of May, approximately 80,000 people were killed and at least 26,000 were injured. Most deaths and injuries were found in two specific suburban areas of Chengdu. The center of the quake was located roughly 75 kilometers from the inner city of Chengdu. As bad as the fallout was, it would have been much worse had the event struck the city area, which is highly populated.
Chengdu is now focusing much of its efforts to become a major economic hub. With the economy made up of both manufacturing and technology based businesses, the city is growing by leaps and bounds.
