Trois-rivieres Travel Guide, Quebec

Trois-Rivieres, founded in 1634, is one of the oldest cities in North America, but despite all it does not present much touristic or historical importance. Most of the city’s sights and old buildings were destroyed by a fire at the beginning of the 20th century, and nowadays Trois-Rivieres is nothing more than a convenient stop on the way from Montreal to Quebec City. There is not much to see in Trois Rivieres except the old town, a small collection of arguably old houses that makes a good spot for a stroll.

If you decide to spend a few days in Trois Rivieres, you can visit a museum or two or the old prison, but don’t expect any spectacular tourist attractions or a lively nightlife. This Trois-Rivieres Travel Guide will tell you more about how to get to the city and where to stay.

Trois-Rivieres Travel Guide - Transport

Trois-Rivieres is about halfway between Montreal and Quebec City. The easiest way to reach it is by bus, about two hours from either Montreal or Quebec City. Route 40, which links these two cities, crosses Trois-Rivieres, so if you’re touring the region in a rented car, you won’t have any trouble finding it. Trois-Rivieres Airport, close to the city, is a smallish airport by international standards, but it has flights to and from Toronto and Monteal.

Once you’re in Trois-Rivieres you can easily explore the city centre on foot, although you might have to ask the locals for directions, since signs are quite rare. Trois-Rivieres is a great starting point for excursions in the nearby La Mauricie National Park or for kayaking on the Saint Lawrence River. Just ask for more information at the local tourist information office, there are regular buses that can take you to your destination.

Trois-Rivieres Travel Guide - Accommodation

Comfort Inn is an inexpensive and relatively comfortable hotel close to the university and the old city centre. Amenities are decent, there is full continental breakfast served at the hotel’s buffet, and the hotel’s Guest Service Representative can help you book river cruises on Saint Lawrence.

Delta Trois Rivieres is one of the nicest hotels in the city, located on the shores of the river, not far from the Prison. The hotel’s restaurant, Le Troquet, offers a varied menu and there are facilities such as sauna and an indoor swimming pool. Auberge Godfroy is the perfect hotel for those who want to spoil themselves. The hotel has a golf course, a spa, and famously delicious cuisine.
