Sarajevo Sights and Landmarks Guide, Bosnia And Herzegowina
Sarajevo is a beautiful city on the Balkan Peninsula boasting of many sights for you to see during a visit here. There are many structures here ranging from mosques to scientific institutions to beautiful mountains worth visiting during your visit to Sarajevo.
The oldest of the scientific and cultural institutions here is the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which was founded in 1888. It was because Bosnia and Herzegovina was one of the unexplored countries of the Balkans, many scientists from Austria and Hungary patronage this institution.
The heart of Sarajevo, Bascarsija offers glimpses of Ottoman Sarajevo while Bjelasnica Mountain is a mountain famous for hiking during summer and for downhill skiing in the winter. Bjelasnica Ski Area is great for bald peak skiing, with the large area found above the tree line. You can always spend the night here as there is accommodation provided here.
The bridges of Sarajevo
The Bazaar of Sarajevo is a popular covered bazaar of Sarajevo that was built in the 16th century. It is rectangular in shape and has long passages like those found in Arabic places. One of the most beautiful buildings of the city is the Emperor’s Mosque, built in 15th Century.
The city is connected across River Miljacka through the bridges of Sarajevo. The oldest one is Kozia Cuprija while the most famous bridge is Latinska Cuprija, the place where the Austro-Hungarian Archduke Franz Ferdinand was executed.
The Old Orthodox Church is a 16th century building that serves the local Orthodox community while the Franciscan Church that was built in neo gothic style, serves the local Catholic community. The most important mosque of Sarajevo worth visiting is the Gazi Husrey-begova Dzamija.
The Ashkenazi Synagogue
The Ashkenazi Synagogue was built in 1902, and serves the Jewish community of Sarajevo. This is a highly decorated synagogue with a high and ornate ceiling that is highlighted by a ten pointed star. It has huge arches and rich decorations while its women’s galleries are supported by columns. There is a stone menorah found in its entrance, commemorating the 400 year anniversary of the Jews of Bosnia.
The city hall of Sarajevo is called ‘Vijecnica’ and is a symbol of Sarajevo. It was built in the 19th century and is a sight worth visiting in Sarajevo. The public fountain, Sebilj was built in pseudo Moorish style, and is today a symbol of Sarajevo where people come to drink its fresh and crisp water every day. All these sights make Sarajevo a place worth visiting on your next trip to the Balkan Peninsula.
