Antwerp Nightlife – Eating Out
Antwerp is sure to delight you from a culinary point of view, as it is home to the delicious Belgian waffles and Belgian beer that almost always comes with an appetizing combination of cheese. The Grote Markt and its surrounding areas are the most frequented places for a quick delicious bite and for the famous and very tasty Belgian fries. Flemish cuisine is very highly rated and respected in Antwerp, so if you want to go classical there are plenty of sophisticated restaurants where you can have the carbonnade flamande (Flemish beef with beer stew) or the paling in’t groen (eel with vegetables and herbs). We recommend Euterpia restaurant which has a large variety of great dishes and a stylish interior or the Bizzie Lizzie where you’re in for lots of culinary surprises. The city also offers a considerable number of restaurants with international dishes and exotic cuisines from remote corners of the world.
Antwerp Nightlife – The Beer and the Pubs
Beer drinking is a national tradition in Belgium that dates back to the 15th century and the country’s collection of beer is the largest in the world. From ambers and golden ales to the Flemish red and lambic beers, you can find them all in Antwerp’s pubs. The de Konick brewery is located in Antwerp, so you’ll find their beer served on draught in most of the pubs. The standard Antwerp beer is the pale ale and it comes at very decent prices. One of the most popular beer pub in Antwerp is Faam, appreciated by beer lovers from around the world; Den Billekletser is another good spot where you’ll find a great selection of beer at moderate prices, but Kulminator is definitely the best beer joint you’ll find in all of Antwerp. Only their new beer selection seems to be never ending, but what they truly specialize in are the old beers, making it a place you aren’t allowed to miss.
Antwerp Nightlife – Clubs and Dancing
Antwerp has a real tradition with the night clubs and you’ll find live jazz or blues at almost any bar that opens after 10 PM. Besides these there are lots of discos that play excellent DJ music and have several years’ tradition in entertaining the crowds. On the more sophisticated side you can choose a night out at Nanno sur L’o, a very elegant bar located inside a ship docked on the river Scheldt. Dress code is mandatory. Reve’s is the place to go for the best striptease shows, while the king of the gay bars is Red and Blue. The most famous club in Antwerp is the seventeen year old Café d’Anvers, where people from Brussels and even from Amsterdam come to party. It now specializes in techno-house-electro genres and if you want to be a part of the real action here it’s advisable to arrive after 1 AM.
