Obertauern, Austria – Overview

Obertauern is a famous tourist spot in Radstädter Tauern, Austria. Obertauern is regarded as one of the most beautiful resorts in Austria. The resort is divided into the two communities Untertauern and Tweng. The village of Obertauern is located around the highest point of “Tauern pass”. The Valley of Obertauern belongs to two districts Tamsweg and St. Johann/Pongau etc. The community of Obertauern is divided into the two townships Tweng and Untertauern.

The history of Obertauern goes back to the era of the Celts. Tracks of Roman Roads have also been recorded in this area. Emperor Claudius improved the Roman Roads and other historical monuments. The first definite mention of the Obertauern was recorded in 1207. There was a small church at the top of the pass. Some of the historical buildings of the 12th century are still in good condition. After the 1st World War, the town of Obertauern grew as a wonderful ski resort.

The locals celebrate the birthday of the town on the December 08th, 1929. In this year, the regular traffic took place in Obertauern. The avalanche protection and streets were paved in 1950. The firs platter lifts were also established in the same year. Between 1952 and 1961 cable lifts were established. In 1961, ultra-modern cable way was established in this town. In the 1990s many developmental and modernization works were completed.
