Klagenfurt Sights – Historical Sites
The Old City in Klagenfurt has various Renaissance buildings and historical landmarks which provide tourists with many attractions to visit.
Viktring Abbey. This landmark used to be a Cistercian Monastery. It was burned in 1411 and was restored after. Within the vicinity of the abbey, a building, which used to function as a textile factory, is now a secondary school.
Landhaus. Built in 1574 and finished in 1590, this grand palace served as a home. Today, Landhaus is the seat of the State Assembly.
Klagenfurt Sights – Landmarks
There are many stunning landmarks found in Klagenfurt. Some of these were created in honor of the legends of the city. Others are breathtaking attractions of the city.
Lindworm Fountain. This is known as the heraldic insignia of Klagenfurt carved by Ulrich Vogelsang around the 1590s. The fountain shows the figure of the monstrous dragon which was defeated by the first inhabitants of the city.
Maria Theresia Monument. Found on the eastern side of the Neuer Platz, this monument was built in 1873 in honor of Empress Maria Theresa. The statue of the empress is made of bronze and below is an inscription that states “In Memory of the Great Empress.”
Klagenfurt Sights – Sports and Recreational Sites
Sports and recreational sites of Klagenfurt include stadiums and parks which cater to sports fanatics and children of all ages.
Hypo-Arena. The first stadium in this site was built in 1960. It was then knocked down in 2005 and replaced with the new Hypo-Arena. In 2008, the Hypo-Arena became one of the 8 stadiums to host the European Football Championship.
Minimundus Park. This is a miniature park found in Klagenfurt. It has a display of more or less 150 miniatures of architectural models from all over the world. The profit of the park is used to help a children’s organization known as Retter das Kind (Save the Child).
Kreuzbergl Nature Park. This park includes a viewing tower and observatory. There is also a small but fascinating botanical garden found at the foot of the park. Apart from this, a mining museum is connected to the garden.
